Cloth Diapering Videos And Tutorials

Washing cloth diapers how to

Using washable cloth diapers for the first time can be extremely daunting unless you have a grandmother around to show you how things were done before pampers came along! There are many tricks to keeping your cloth diapers odor and stain free as well as keeping your sanity by not having to do multiple loads of laundry a day!

Most importantly you must be organized and stay on top of your diaper laundry.

A quick rinse of fresh dirty diapers will save you hours of cleaning later on.

For some of the best prices on the accessories seen in this video such as Rockin’ Green detergent, drying racks, and drying pins, you should check out our cloth diapers accessories page for information on what else you’ll need to buy along with your new cloth diapers.

What’s The Best Detergent For Washing Cloth Diapers?

Rockin’ Green cloth diaper detergent is one of the best on the market and costs less than $15 for a large bag that will last for months. You can read my review of Rockin’ Green detergent for washing cloth diapers for more detailed information.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

You’ll see how a diapering system will keep your baby diapered in cloth diapers all the time without having to do laundry everyday. I would recommend 20-30 diapers for one baby as this will give you some wiggle room in your laundry schedule.  Do not stock up on diapers until you find your favorite brand.  Then look for a sale and stock up!

How To Wash Cloth Diapers

  • Get a sprayer! Spray and pre-wash.
  • Don’t overcrowd you washer.
  • Use the heaviest/dirtiest setting on your washer.
  • If possible, use hot water to wash your diapers. Please check if your diapers can be washed with hot water first. Some diapers will shrink after being washed with hot water.
  • Wash your diapers in small loads rather than all at once.  They’ll come out cleaner and there’s less chance of stuck on residue.  We used a cheap portable washer like these to do small loads.  This way we didn’t waste a ton of water and electricity with our full sized washing machine.

How To Dry Cloth Nappies?

We spin dry and air dry our diapers.

See my detailed guide on how we dry our cloth diapers here.

Why Air Dry Cloth Diapers?

  1. Air drying keeps the diapers in better shape. When you air dry the diapers you do not have to worry about fabric softener residue from your dryer rubbing off onto the diapers and ruining the absorbent power of the diapers.
  2. Another major reason we hang up our cloth diapers to air dry is the savings in our electricity bill.  Can you imagine how high your electricity bill would be from daily loads of laundry just for diapers?
